ADD: What is it?-cont.

generally very intelligent. Early in the diagnosis of ADD doctors felt that children would grow out of ADD as they entered adulthood. This in the last couple of years has been shown not to be true. Even though an adult with ADD has learned loss of ways to cope with the disorder it still is there. The amount of people who are afflicted with this disorder from rough estimates tends to be from 5% to 20% range. ADHD tends to be more prevalent in boys. It could be the residual type which is more common in girls could be a possible reason for these under diagnoses. It is harder to spot these types of people so it could be underreported. ADD has many degrees, meaning people can have so many problems that they cannot function or can be quite mild and easily treated. ADD has been linked to a genetic cause because of twin studies done. People with ADD also can focus intensely or superfocus on one activity for long periods of time. But these people have trouble switching gears. For example if an ADDer like this was working on something like this they would have trouble dealing with a sudden emergency that had to be attended to that instant.

ADD and Modern Society

Some people wonder why people with ADD seem to be everywhere and why at this point in time? Well for one thing scientists have an idea of what it is and what it isn't to some degree. Psychologically once people have an idea of something or have seen something for the first time they suddenly see them everywhere. This principle can be the same with Attention Deficit Disorder. Modern society does tend to draw people out who have problems fitting into its system. Adders whom tend to do best in an experiential learning environment as opposed to a school which is at odds with their strenghs. People who can't cut it are easily found out in schools. Modern Society also is extremely change oriented. People are moving from their homes to allover the world. People with ADD tend to need a structured environment to function the best. Lastly with the advent of television and the internet, there is what some would describe as an informational overload for people with ADD. I know that if I am in this of environment I get tired easily. Adders have trouble focusing on one thing so they remember much more than most people, but it takes a lot of energy to do this.

Social Life:

Adders often have bad social skills. This often begins in childhood when someone with ADHD has trouble engaging because of impulsive behavior. Secondly it can be self esteem issue at some point, feeling constantly that you are a failure doesn't exactly motivate you to meet people. This doubt about ones self carries over through the attitude ultimately that you have about people. People can read the kinds of verbal and nonverbal cues. Also Adders have trouble keeping promises because of lack of follow through. Consequently some people with ADD never make a promise so they know they won't break it or they are so overwhelmed whit stimuli they say no just to get away from the situation.
